Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to synthesize and present the findings of numerous studies on family holidays and to examine how the discourses of intense sociability, family togetherness, quality time, and children's socialization underlying family holidays have been Westernized. The presentation considers studies of ordinary forms of holidaying together with traditional mass tourism. Key findings show, for example, that in Western contexts family holidays are extremely important in constructing family identity and strengthening family bonds, and that family time and children's own time are interdependent. Such holidays provide opportunities to balance social identities associated with family time and more individual interests associated with personal time. More ordinary forms of family holiday provide adults with more "individual time" and "couple time," because children can safely enjoy exceptional opportunities and interact with other children during their own time. "Genuine quality family time" occurs in the valuable intervals between moments of family togetherness involving all family members and moments of intense sociability. The presentation also points to research agendas that have not yet been adequately addressed by the social turn in tourism studies and current theories of family holidays. These include extended families and their holiday practices, particularly three-generation holidays and grandparent holidays; the emphasis placed thus far on the nuclear family, which has led researchers to overlook non-nuclear families, single-parent families, rainbow families, and others; the need for tourism researchers to give voice to children; and the urgency of developing non-Westernized discourses.
